Can it be done?

January 11th, 2009 at 12:46 am

I told DH about only spending $100 this month on groceries, initially he said it is doable (when he thought there were only 2 weeks left in the month) but then he realized we still have 3 weeks to go and now he thinks it can't be done...lol. This is definitely streching it, so I need a plan for this to work. Firstly, I went through the pantry and the fridge to see what we have. And then I wrote out a rough menu plan base on those ingredients. Basically, we will have to make a few pasta dishes, curries, beans and vegies to stretch out our stock. Hopefully it can be done if not then no big deal.

Does the $100 include any dining out? I have had to budget as little as $30.00 a week for groceries, so I know it is possible. It's just a lot of work - buying generic, shopping at some place like Aldi, planning your menus, etc. It's not impossible, just very difficult. It might depend on whether you have kids to buy for. One place to check is http://www.thriftyfun.com. The website has areas with lots of tips on finances, recipes, and a coupon swapping page.

Dunno if you like stuff like this but you can always make your own pasta like dishes for pretty cheap while having food for the next day. What I do is stock up on ramen (i'm in college) which you can usually get for 18 cents a bag. Then get the bulk bag of vegies and the bag of chicken breast and create your own soup. Get some chicken stock, you can usually get that for a dollar and you are set. Plus you have chicken and veggies for the next day. Works for me and thats usually two or three days that I have food, depending on how much I eat. Oh, make sure you cook the chicken first before putting it in the noodles. I know thats a duh but my friend didn't realize that...then again, she's kinda slow.

Thanks crazyliblady, I will check that site out. It's just DH and me, so no kids. Unfortunately coupons are pretty much non-existent here in Australia. But I do shop at Aldi and at the market which are a lot cheaper than the big supermarket shops.

Beautissamiss I actually thought about making homemade pasta since we do have one of those pasta makers and we have done it before. They taste nicer freshly made than those store bought ones. We do have lots of store bought pasta too. And I will also be making chicken stock today using the bones of the chicken that I bought yesterday. I'll be making minestrone soup out of it.

    Thanks for your encouragements. Smile
