Hot water tank is busted

August 18th, 2012 at 03:21 am

I had a shower this morning and it was freaking cold. Yikes! DH had to go out in the freezing cold to see if he could fix it. Not good, the pilot light is off and he couldn't light it up anymore. It might be time to get it replaced, it is about 15 years old, we have had it fixed/replaced a part about 6-7 years ago and some area have corroded and it's leaking. We both think that it might be better to just get a new system. I think last time we got the termostat replaced, it cost almost $400 for both parts and labour. I just had a quick google for a new one and we can get the cheapest one for just over $1000 fully installed. I think the one that we might want to get will be around $1500-$2000, it will be so much more efficient than our current one. The household fund will have to take a hit this month.

Just when things are going well...something unexpected happens. I suggest you look at reviews on Consumer's as the least expensive is not always the best solution long term. Let us know what you chose as efficiency is important as the cost of utilities increase.

I know right? Such is life. Just thankful we have the cash to cover it. This is why I like to have a couple thousand dollars in the household fund all the time. We have a list of to do/get for the house but I always like to wait a while until we have extra in the fund just in case some thing else comes up. I guess the new oven (and new garage door, new windows, etc...)will have to wait a while.

DH have spent his afternoon in bed researching about hot water units (something for him to do while recovering from a fever). Maybe if he feels up to it we will go to the shops tomorrow to have a look at them.

Well, if you can cover it then at least you will probably find that it leads to some insurance of savings on the energy bill. The amount of efficiency in the newer models of appliances is really amazing when compared with the older ones. Good luck, and enjoy that warm shower when you can get it!
